Manual or Electric Toothbrush – Which is Best?

The humble toothbrush has certainly evolved. Everyone knows that the best way to keep your teeth looking clean and healthy is to use a toothbrush with toothpaste. We have been using this tool for centuries and the basic design hasn’t really changed that much. The brush head is available in a variety of textures and sizes and you can choose to buy a manual brush or a battery operated rechargeable brush.

The Benefits of a Manual Toothbrush

The main benefits of using a manual toothbrush is that they are relatively inexpensive. You can get them in different sizes so you will be able to find the right brush to suit each member of your family.

You can choose a hard bristle or a soft short bristle brush quite easily. It is best to speak to your dentist so that he or she can advise you on the best style for your teeth.

Toothbrushes tend to wear out and lose their effectiveness over time. It is advisable to get a new one every three months. This can be done very easily and cheaply when you buy use a manual variety.

The Downside to the Manual Toothbrush

There is one major negative point to using a manual toothbrush. Many people do not really know how to use their brush. They tend to apply too much pressure when cleaning their teeth. This can cause stress and pain to the gum line and to sensitive teeth.

The Benefits of an Electric Toothbrush

The biggest benefit of using an electric toothbrush is that you do not have to apply any external pressure to the brush. If you place the head against your teeth, the rotating or oscillating action will take care of everything. There is less chance of causing stress to the gum line.

If you purchase one of the most up to date models, you can also get a brush that has a built in timer so you know exactly when you have cleaned your teeth for long enough.

The Downside to the Electric Toothbrush

These types of brushes will cost a lot more money than a regular manual toothbrush. You have to invest in the unit and then in replacing the brush head once they wear out. The other expense incurred is the cost of the electricity or batteries needed in order to power the brush. There is no such additional charge for the manual version.

Both styles of toothbrushes have their positive and negative attributes. The most important positive is that they both do the job of cleaning teeth. As long as you are using one of these at least twice a day, your teeth will have the chance to last a lot longer and you will find that you will need less treatment sessions at the dentist.
