What is Flossing?
Dental floss is made from a very thin strip of nylon or plastic. It is used to clean the space in between teeth, where a toothbrush can not reach.
To floss, you take an adequate amount of the dental floss, wrap the ends securely around your fingers and slowly work the thread between the gap of each teeth. This will help to dislodge any leftover food and to break up any build up of plaque. Each time you move onto the next tooth, use a clean section of the dental floss so that you are not contaminating the area.
Repeat the process until you have cleaned the area between each tooth.
Did You Know That Less Than Half The Population Floss?
Flossing is just as important as cleaning your teeth, yet studies have shown that people are just not doing it. There are several reasons for this.
Many people do not understand the significant difference that flossing can make to the health and well being of their teeth. They understand that toothpaste cleans but many people do not think about the areas where their toothbrushes can not reach. That area only gets looked at by the dentist or dental hygienist if people happen to make an appointment.
Another reason why fewer people floss is because they find it difficult. It can be quite a task to hold on to the dental floss with your fingers and slip it in-between the gaps of the teeth without causing discomfort.
However if you take the time to practice, you will find that it gets easier to do and your teeth will thank you for it.
When Should You Floss?
It is recommended that you floss your teeth on a daily basis. This is something that you can do first thing in the morning or, if you prefer, you can do it just before you go to bed. You can choose to floss your teeth before or after brushing. This is a personal preference.
What Types of Flossing Products are Available?
You can choose to buy dental floss that comes in a small plastic dispenser. You pull out the required amount and cut the thread on the in-built cutter.
Alternatively, you can use a dental floss wand or pick. These are usually made from plastic and have a section of floss already in position and ready for use. This is good for people who don’t like wrapping the thread around their fingers, although the wand can be a little tricky when trying to clean the back teeth.
You have to take a look at the different methods of flossing and decide which way is the most suitable and convenient for you. If you use dental floss every day, you will boost the health of your teeth and reduce the damage caused by tooth decay and gum disease.
